Work In Progress: Six months Later

Last week I celebrated the 6-month anniversary for the start of my blog, ‘Work in Progress.’ After a slow start to the beginning of the year, the blog was an attempt at my only resolution for 2010: to get my voice back.  When I began, I had no idea what the blog would evolve into. By sharing the books I’ve read and the people I’ve met which have informed and inspired my journey I wanted to use the blog as a platform to empower others to live their dreams.

I have definitely been blown away by the responses and feedback I’ve received thus far.  What also amazes me is how the blog has inspired me to move forward on other new and renewed goals and dreams.  I can’t take credit for the blog completely.  I have been encouraged by the work of the following bloggers over the past 6 months:

Kevin Simpsonwww.kdsl.wordpress.com

Candace Hollingsworthwww.hyattsvillenow.com

Sarah Stankorbwww.eveningessayist.com

Noah Stephenswww.thepeopleofdetroit.com

Allison Joneswww.allisonj.org

Rosetta Thurmanwww.rosettathurman.com

Kim Grocewww.kgrocelivingoutloud.blogspot.com

Through their efforts, I have truly been inspired to keep chugging along, especially during those days when I felt I didn’t have an entry worth sharing with the rest of the world.  A few of them (Kevin, Candace, and Sarah in particular) were not afraid to give me a swift kick in the tail when I started to give in to my bad habits of perfectionism and procrastination.

I know I have great deal to learn about blogging, and I was definitely taken aback when Rosetta Thurman, noted Gen Y professional nonprofit blogger recently recognized Work In Progress as one of 32 Nonprofit & Philanthropy Blogs Written By People of Color.  That was huge for me because she IS a blogger.  I just like to write stuff and let WordPress work its magic.  Just like Noah Stephens is a photographer, I just like to take pictures.

I am excited about what will come to pass over the next 6 months.  I am looking forward to blogging more frequently, ideally once a week.  I am also looking forward to having more guest bloggers which was very well received after I posted the entry by Latasha Lucas, ‘Breaking Up With MARVIN’.   Additionally I hope to serve as a guest blogger for others, similar to the entry I wrote for the Black Philanthropic Alliance titled ‘The Leaders Among Us: Clients as Nonprofit Leaders‘.

There are two projects I am looking forward to over the next 6 months:

  • MAJOR Impact (Making Access to Jobs Our Responsibility) – A volunteer movement aimed at empowering everybody to help somebody find a job.  MAJOR Impact is based on one simple premise:  You don’t have to be a workforce professional to help someone find a job.  There is a role for each of us to play.I kicked off MAJOR Impact during the month of May with Resume Rescue Month where I paired job seekers with volunteer resume reviewers across the country who were interested in receiving feedback and suggestions on making their resume stronger.  The response has been phenomenal and there are several volunteers and participants interested in keeping the efforts going.  Over the next few weeks I will be unveiling several other opportunities to get involved with MAJOR Impact. Check out the website at www.majorimpact.org
  • Major Impact Consulting – back in 2006, I negotiated my first consulting contract with World Vision Laos serving as a grant writer for several large scale start-up projects focused on food security, HIV/AIDS awareness, and community based disaster management.  Four years later, the time has come for me to get back into the habit of marketing my skills and experience to help develop high-impact organizations across the globe.

Stay tuned for more over the next six months!
